Building an electric transformer is a precise, multi-step process that combines technical skill with careful craftsmanship. It begins with the core, typically made from laminated steel sheets stacked to reduce energy loss. Next, copper or aluminum wire is meticulously wound into coils to create the primary and secondary windings—each measured to exact specifications based on voltage requirements. Insulation materials are applied to prevent electrical faults, and the windings are securely mounted onto the core. The assembly is then placed into a durable steel tank, where it’s filled with insulating oil or a similar cooling medium. Once sealed, each transformer undergoes rigorous testing, including high-voltage tests, insulation resistance checks, and thermal evaluations to ensure it meets industry standards. From start to finish, building a transformer requires precision, safety awareness, and a strong understanding of electrical principles.

Become a Transformer Technician
As a technician at Northwest Transformer Co, you’ll be at the heart of the manufacturing process—hands-on with the tools, materials, and techniques that bring our transformers to life. From winding coils and assembling cores to precision testing and final inspections, every step demands attention to detail, safety, and quality craftsmanship. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals and receive training to understand the inner workings of both pole-mounted and pad-mounted transformers. It’s a role for those who take pride in building something that truly powers communities.
