Electrical Transformer Safety Guidelines

At Northwest Transformer Co, safety is our highest priority. Whether you're a homeowner, business owner, contractor, or city official, understanding how to work safely around electrical transformers is essential. Our transformers—pole-mounted and pad-mounted—are built to the highest standards, and we encourage all users to follow these guidelines to ensure safe handling and operation.

⚠️ General Safety Guidelines

  • Always Assume Transformers Are Energized
Never touch or tamper with a transformer unless you are a qualified professional. Transformers can be dangerous even when they appear inactive

  • Maintain a Safe Distance
Keep at least 10 feet away from pole-mounted transformers and all overhead power lines. For pad-mounted units, never sit, climb, or allow children to play on or around the transformer box

  • Report Damage Immediately
If you notice a transformer that is leaking, damaged, open, or emitting noise or smoke, contact your local utility provider or emergency services immediately.

🧰 For Homeowners and Business Owners

  • Never Attempt Repairs
Only licensed electrical professionals or utility personnel should handle transformer-related repairs or service.

  • Clear Vegetation
Keep bushes, trees, and landscaping at least 10 feet away from pad-mounted transformers to ensure visibility and maintenance access.

  • Know What’s On Your Property
Be aware of transformer locations, especially before digging or installing fencing, patios, or other structures.

🏗️ For Contractors and Maintenance Crews

  • Call Before You Dig
Always contact 811 or your local utility marking service before excavation. Underground cables leading to transformers pose a serious risk.

  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
All personnel working near transformers should use the appropriate PPE, including arc-rated clothing, gloves, and face protection.

  • De-Energize When Possible
If maintenance requires close contact with a transformer, ensure it is de-energized and properly grounded by a qualified technician.

🏙️ For Cities and Utility Managers

  • Regular Inspections
Schedule routine inspections of all pole- and pad-mounted transformers to check for signs of wear, corrosion, or unauthorized access.

  • Labeling and Signage
Ensure all units are clearly labeled with high-voltage warnings and identification numbers for emergency reporting.

  • Community Education
Share safety tips with local residents through newsletters, public signage, or community events to promote awareness and caution.
